More than three hundred years ago explorers and fur traders traveled through this protected waterway of 36 islands known as Les Cheneaux, a French expression meaning "The Channels."

Today the sheltered bays, boat houses, sandy beaches, and natural beauty of the area provide four seasons of fun, rest, and relaxation for vacationers and residents alike. Two thousand people call Clark Township home, living in the towns of Cedarville, Hessel, or residing within the Les Cheneaux Islands.
